  • The key to any successful project is in the preparation, just ask any chef who's cooking dinner for 100 people. DIY and building projects should be treated in the same manner.
  • Make sure that you understand how the project will be carried out and what skills you'll need.
  • You will need to compile a list of tools and materials required to complete the task. Being ill prepared wastes a lot of time if you keep having to nip out for more items to do the job.
  • Making a list and estimating how much time will be needed for each stage of the work will be very useful. Using spreadsheets for listing items in larger project can be helpful when some calculations are required. Another advantage is that you always have a spare list.
  • Another important list will be the contact list containing all the people involved in the project such as Building Inspectors, various tradesmen, skip companies, builders merchants etc. Again make several copies or put the list on a PC. Pin the list in the area next to the phone or if working from mobile phones, place the lists in areas of least noise.
  • The physical preparation such as removing as many obstacles as possible from the work area, sheeting up where necessary etc must also be considered, allowing time for this prior to the work starting proper.
  • Preparing areas designated for deliveries of bulk items such as sand and bricks will also help to smooth the way.
  • Some other factors worthy of consideration are the availability of water, electricity and lighting especially in winter when natural daylight is in short supply.
  • Spending a few hours planning your work can save days when working your plan.
